DUKES Hotel Review: Housed in a private, gaslamp-lit cul-de-sac just off busy St. James’s Street, this red-brick Edwardian building is not the easiest to find without detailed directions --- but a good London cabbie will be able to get you there no problem. Since David Naylor-Leyland originally took over DUKES, there has been a splendid refurbishment and a reduction in the pricing, all of which is good news. But tradition remains the key element here in St. James, the heart of old gentlemen’s clubs, known for its centuries-old shops and bespoke tailors. Of the 90 rooms and eleven suites, most have four-poster beds and are designed in different shapes with unique décor. They have all been adorned with handpicked antiques, hung with oil paintings and fitted with elegant marble bathrooms. For those looking to spend a little cash, the penthouse suite has the bonus of a private roof terrace, which can be used for parties or simply admiring a panoramic view of gorgeous old London town. If you've had a long day, take your newspaper down to the sitting room and unwind by the fireplace with one of the hotel's extensive range of cognacs, or head to the hotel's newest addition, the PJ Lounge, a champagne and cocktail lounge partnered with Perrier-Jouët and splashed with bright green and rose tones.
