Gran Hotel de la Ciudad de Mexico Review: The grandeur of nineteenth-century Mexico City is well preserved within the graceful hallways of the Gran Hotel de la Ciudad de Mexico. A gem of art nouveau architecture, the hotel's ornate elevator shafts flank either end of the lobby, while an intricate stained glass dome, designed by Tiffany, illuminates the ceiling. As you walk up the marble staircase to the hotel's main lobby, the sound of songbirds rings from antique brass cages. Guest rooms are graciously decorated in the nineteenth-century style, with romantic details like wooden armchairs and canopy beds. Charm is this hotel's selling point, but not everything is Old World: wireless Internet and satellite TV makes sure you stay connected to the twenty-first-century. While the atmosphere is opulent, guests to the Gran Hotel should remember that this is not an ultra-luxury establishment. Service is not what you would receive at upscale hotels and, like other accommodations along the Zocalo, it can be very noisy at night. However, for those who want to really soak up Mexico City's colonial culture, the Gran Hotel's atmosphere and location is ideal, placing you just steps away from many of the city's most famous sights.
