When The Plaza, the Beaux Arts belle of Big Apple hotels, shut down for renovation, as well as for a partial conversion into resident condos in 2005, New York history-philes and local purveyors of luxury let out a collective gasp. But three years and $400 million later the 1907 hotel swung open its pearly gates to much fanfare. It’s smaller now---805 guest rooms shrunk to 282 rooms---but everything we loved about The Plaza is still here, and better. The mosaics gleam, gold-trimmed ceilings glimmer, and the celebrities of the past still haunt the property (Truman Capote’s famed “Black and White Ball” took place here and the Beatles stayed here). A newly unveiled stained glass ceiling, covered up in the 1940s, is the star of the Palm Court dining room. The guest rooms are a blend of new and old: flat-screen TVs, iPod docking stations, WiFi, are buttressed by 24-karat gold Sherle Wagner sinks, mosaic bathroom floors and on-call white-gloved butlers on every floor. Guests lucky enough to nab one of the pricey rooms aren’t just paying for a spot in the lap of luxury or top-of-the-line service; they’re paying to wander the halls and rooms of New York history. |
