The W chain has done it again, bringing that nouveau-Hollywood style to New York with this downtown property that straddles the East Village and Gramercy Park. W's signature living room (a.k.a. the lobby) features 16-foot arched windows overlooking Union Square and topiary walls filled with lush plants. The front desk is on a grass lawn with granite stepping stones. In room you'll find all the usual W luxuries: dreamy beds with 250-count linens and goose-down duvets, Aveda bath products, CD players with CD libraries, VCRs with video collections and work stations with high-speed data port connectivity. Wondering what the W stands for? Try warm, witty and wonderful. If you're approaching 50, though, you may not agree. But the Gen-Xers certainly do. Chef Todd English brings the hotel his famed wood-oven Olives restaurant, which he made a player first in Boston and then at Bellagio Las Vegas. The basement bar, appropriately named Underbar, is as cozy as it is hip. |
