 This hotel is inextricably linked to the infamous Round Table writers---Robert Benchley, Dorothy Parker, Alexander Woolcott, et al. They lunched for ten consecutive years in the Rose Room starting in 1919, and since that time, the hotel hasn't lost its appeal to creative spirits who continue to congregate in the clubby spaces despite the change in ownership. Textiles, carpets and wall coverings in the Arts and Crafts style are found throughout, and a $3 million renovation in 2004 maintained the property's historic character while bringing it into the modern age. Not to worry, though. One element didn't change: the New Yorker wallpaper in the corridors, designed by one of the magazine's cartoonists, Robert Mankoff. The refurbishment included guestrooms and public spaces, including the Oak Room cabaret (still one of the city's best, having launched the likes of Harry Connick Jr.), Round Table Room and lobby, which is equipped with wireless Internet access. All guestrooms have Internet, larger workstations and designer window treatments and bedding, and most also have flat-screen TVs. Additional upgrades include all-white Algonquin beds and new artwork: black and white photographs of the hotel. Keep in mind that some accommodations are downright cramped.
