 Guests enter this hotel through tall iron gates via a courtyard lit by Florentine lanterns. The heart of it is the Italian Renaissance-style palace designed in 1882. Public spaces are rich with architectural details including coffered ceilings, bronze doré moldings, mosaics, murals and stained glass by Tiffany. Fireplaces include a beauty in the upper lobby crafted by Augustus St. Gaudens. Off the lower lobby, Istana is a casually elegant venue for innovative Mediterranean cuisine. Its olive bar has more than thirty varieties, and it offers a sterling list of sherries and a tapas menu. The newer Gilt restaurant serves modern European cuisine within the courtyard gates of the property's Villard Mansion. Since the royal family of Brunei purchased the hotel, rooms have undergone a total renovation. Gone is the gaudy red-and-gold color scheme favored by former owner Leona Helmsley. In its place is a sophisticated palate of neutral and earth tones. Accommodations are largely located in the artfully integrated, 55-story reflective glass tower. Rich woods and marble baths grace rooms on the top floors; guests in these enjoy a private reception area and butler service. The Executive rooms have a lounge, and their occupants are treated to complimentary breakfast. Deluxe rooms in the main hotel are equally large and comfortable. |
