This cutting-edge classic was conceived by the late Steve Rubell and Ian Schrager. It has been dubbed the most visually exciting hotel of the decade. The hyper-stylish lobby more resembles a fashion catwalk than a traditional reception/checkout area. The velvet-lined bar sits at the back of the lobby. Its curvy, lime-colored banquettes and tassel-draped mirrors attract so many of New York’s media elite plus the models, stylists and photographers they employ that it’s been dubbed the Condé Nast Canteen. The lobby’s sleek design aesthetic---crafted so skillfully by Philippe Starck---is carried into the 205 guest rooms. They are furnished with mahogany cabinets and blue-velvet armchairs and have separate sitting and working areas plus cushioned window seats. The bathrooms have either a custom round tub built into a concave slate wall or a slate-and-glass-walled shower. Working fireplaces and lacquered boxes filled with Dean & DeLuca treats are some of the more notable amenities. A drawback? Zero views. But the public spaces make up for it. A 20-foot-long library table is the centerpiece of the Sunken Study, a reading area furnished with books and magazines. There’s also a game room. |
