After viewing the unassuming, minimalist façade of this Ian Schrager property, it’s hard to believe what lies inside. Bathed in soft yellow light, Philippe Starck’s design includes a glass-enclosed escalator that whisks visitors up to the airy, exposed brick, atrium-like lobby. From there, guests have the option of having a drink in the outdoor town square, with its 45-foot high trees, or eating in the Hudson Caféteria, which looks like Versailles crashed into the set of the movie Barbarella. This island within an island offers everything you need, and then some. Among its many boasts are a rooftop garden and private park. Fitness facilities include a gym and bathhouse. Needless to say, the business center is state-of-the-art, and the bar is space-age chic. Most importantly, the 1,000 rooms—with rich wood paneling and soft white linens—are comfortable and affordable. With so much going on here, there’s really no need to venture out into the city. |
