Otahuna Lodge Hotel Review: One hour south of the Waipara wine district, at the head of a secluded valley on New Zealand’s South Island, sits the elegant, historic country estate of Otahuna Lodge. The property’s five suites and two master suites retain nineteenth-century architectural elements such as ornate original fireplaces, carved inglenooks and stained glass windows. Added in-room amenities include super-king beds, custom-made linens, toiletries by Penhaligon’s of London, deep bathtubs and separate rain showers. Guests take meals communally in the formal dining room, which offers an ever-changing menu using seasonal estate-grown and locally sourced produce. If the small fitness room isn't enough, there are plenty of available activities on and off the Otahuna property. With fly-fishing, golf, heli-touring, hiking, biking, horseback riding, tennis, swimming, croquet and petanque, guests can choose between physically challenging and relaxing ventures. Other options for unwinding come in the form of massages or lounging in the property’s 110-year-old gardens.
