Room at Hotel deLuxe, Portland, ORThis venerable local favorite, fka the Mallory Hotel, is a sure hit with golden agers and young hipsters alike. A stop at the exquisite Driftwood Bar is like stepping back into the mid-century, a time when men wore fedoras, women wore fur and people weren't afraid of drinking a few stiff cocktails before the dinner hour. The staff here is very friendly, and guests return again and again. Comfortable charm is the key, since nothing is too fancy—yet there's a sense of individual elegance. Large standard guest rooms enjoy amenities that include flat panel TVs with HDTV, wireless high-speed Internet access, iPod stations in every guest room, and a pillow menu. The two-room suites are a particularly good value. This is an old-school establishment, built in 1912, that prides itself on gracious service. Gracie's evokes the feel of the Hollywood Brown Derby or Musso and Frank's. While the property may feel slightly off the beaten track, it is in fact on the MAX rail line and just a short walk into the heart of the city.
