Since the two larger resorts on this island were built, this small ten-room plantation era hotel has taken a back seat to the grander and more luxurious Koele Lodge and Manele Bay. Located in the center of Lanai City, this hotel has no pool and is quite a distance from the white sand beaches of Manele. However, it still has loads of charm and friendly service. It is close to the center of town near the island's shops and restaurants and especially near the golf links of the nine holes of Cavendish where greens fees are on the honor system and no tee times are required. The Hotel Lanai is reminiscent of the old plantation days with white wicker furniture on its spacious lanai and slow-moving ceiling fans in each room (but no air-conditioning). The hotel offers a complimentary continental breakfast for in-house guests, as well as tasty fare for lunch and dinner at its Lana'i City Grille. Best of all, the family-owned Hotel Lanai offers insight into what this specific island has been like for the past century---a place where talking to your neighbors is more important than hurrying to get things done, where watching the sunrise is considered necessary for mental health and staring into the starry night sky is a nightly activity. |
