| Located just 5 miles from the Hilo Airport, this beautifully restored house was built in 1899. It was home to one of the island's most distinguished families who claimed among their guests Jack London and Hawaii's beloved last monarch, Queen Liliuokalani. Owned by fourth-generation Shipmans, the property is now one of the island's most elegant B&B inns. It is furnished with antiques, including many original pieces from when the family resided in the stately home. There are three rooms in the main house and two in the gatehouse; all have private baths. Breakfast is a Continental buffet that may include macadamia nut granola, local fruits, fruit breads or rolls, baked bananas and Kona coffee. Downtown Hilo is close by, with a cornucopia of restaurants, art galleries and antique shops. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is an easy day trip, with excellent hiking opportunities. |
