| If a nene goose (Hawaii’s endangered state bird) were to fly due north from Waikiki, it would wind up at the Turtle Bay Hilton, which is on the opposite side of Oahu. It’s at Kahuku, near some of the best surfing beaches in the world, including Sunset Beach, Ehukai Beach and the legendary Banzai Pipeline; in the winter, the waves here frighten with their ferocity. The hotel sits on a peninsula that juts into the Pacific, making it one of the most dramatically poised hotels in the Islands. It’s a great place to sit on the lanai and watch the surf crash below---a strangely soothing experience, especially at night. Rooms are comfortable and spacious. Activities range from tennis and golf to horseback riding and snorkeling in the protected bay. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are available at the Palm Terrace; the à la carte evening menu is augmented by buffets with changing themes, including country-style food Sundays and Thursdays, seafood Wednesdays and Hawaiian dishes like lau lau, poi and kalua pork Fridays. Dress casual and come early because they don’t take reservations. |
