This posh hotel started life as a private mansion owned by the founder of Santa Monica, Senator John P. Jones. For over a century it has welcomed such illustrious guests as Howard Hughes, Marilyn Monroe, Eleanor Roosevelt, Senator and Mrs. John F. Kennedy and former President William Jefferson Clinton. It is a place of legend, beginning with the awesome Moreton Bay fig tree that is the centerpiece of the beautiful courtyard at the entrance. A broke Australian sailor as payment left the sapling for this tree with a local bartender for his bar tab. Today the hotel does a fine job of maintaining its historical ambiance while keeping up with the times, most recently to the tune of a $16-million renovation. The guest rooms are divided between the older---and more charming---six-story brick Palisades wing and the contemporary ten-story Ocean Tower. Many on the upper level have superb ocean views. As well, the grounds host a collection of 32 bungalows, which are the only accommodation of their kind in Santa Monica. They are separated from the main buildings by beautifully landscaped gardens and fountains, and their French doors open onto private patios overlooking the Pacific. The property’s Club Sante Day Spa offers a full range of treatments. |
