| During the Roaring Twenties, this grand and stately brick building was one of L.A.'s most glamorous hotels. Now, located in a vibrantly multi-cultural and low-rent neighborhood, it provides a decent place to stay for fans of historical structures and budget-minded tourists who want to be near downtown. The old-style lobby manages to hang onto some of its former glory in such details as hand-etched glass, brass fixtures and ornate pillars. This skylight-graced space is used quite a bit by Hollywood productions for filming. The guest rooms, unfortunately, have been done over one too many times to retain their period aura, but they are nevertheless comfortable and clean. The hotel offers some amenities, such as a workout room and the Orchid Gardens Restaurant that serves a famous all-you-can-eat luncheon buffet. |
