| With its rustic, hunting lodge theme, this hotel opened in 1962 next door to the unrelated Sportsmen’s Lodge Restaurant on a pair of manmade lakes stocked with trout and graced with ducks and swans. Motion pictures and TV shows are occasionally shot here, and recording stars and their entire road crews regularly stay. Though this hotel isn’t nearly as fun as it once was, it’s still a peaceful place with lots of character. When celebrities such as Clark Gable frequented this quaint setting, rates were $9 for a single room and all of $25 for a suite. Today, the hotel has been renovated, a process that robbed it of some of its goofy charm. Nevertheless, spacious rooms overlook an Olympic-size heated pool in the courtyard, as well as the very old-fashioned Patio Café and neighboring Caribou restaurant and Muddy Moose Bar. Courtesy shuttle service to Burbank Airport and Universal Studios is available, as are discount tickets for the Universal Studios Tour. |
