Eat your heart out cool Britannia---this London hot spot is owned by American hotel king Ian Schrager. The buzz about this superbly trendy choice stay was also re-imagined by Phillippe Starck, who transformed what was a soulless, 60s shell into a vast, very twenty-first-century refuge, modernist but with a surprise tribal art figure on your left---a theme which is echoed here and there in all the rooms. All the staff are young, enthusiastic and well-trained (think fetching, grey-overcoated doormen) and many are Americans with other callings and, dare we say it, they make a refreshing change from the typical London hotel employee. Elevators have television screens on each side, from which pairs of eyes stare out at you. On arrival on a floor, the only hangover from the original building seems to be fairly uninteresting narrowish corridors, but when you enter your room, these are soon forgotten. All rooms have floor-to-ceiling windows, and the higher you go the better it gets, with sixth-floor suites having stunning views---the top of Nelson’s column, the London Eye, St. Martin’s spire. Though furniture is quite minimal (onyx desktops, lucite chairs and small African stools), beds are sumptuous with great banks of pillows. The personalized lighting can be changed at the flick of a switch from white to red to blue or green, depending on mood. Every high-tech amenity is on hand: state-of-the-art communications systems, Internet access, etc. The hotel has almost as many fashion/media guests as it does fashion/media victims, many of whom throng to the acclaimed Asia de Cuba restaurant and the packed-to-the-gills Light Bar, both places to see and be seen. |
