| This hotel dates to a time when people knew that Bourbon Street was named for the family of European royals and not the Kentucky whiskey. Its elegant marble lobby strikes a demure tone and provides a dramatic contrast to the rowdy street scene outside. The hotel inhabits a gracious early 19th-century building that has hosted both the pirate Jean Lafitte and the infamous Quadroon Balls, where young free women of color were introduced to potential (white) suitors. The ballroom remains and is popular with event planners. The guest rooms are handsomely decorated. Many feature exposed brick walls that provide a backdrop for Chippendale and Queen Anne reproduction furnishings. Pillow-top mattresses and Golden Door Spa toiletries are just a few of the attentions to detail that make this place stand out. The central location directly behind St. Louis Cathedral provides an ideal base from which travelers can explore the oldest section of the city. The hotel recently completed a $15 million renovation. |
