| Dripping with atmosphere, this rambling hotel boasts some walls that date as far back as the 1700s. As much as possible, its owners show off original features such as exposed brick, cypress and pine beams and stone fireplaces. A minivan shuttles guests around the French Quarter and Central Business District. Furnishings in the 14 patio rooms and 97 standard rooms (some of which are in an annex across Dauphine Street) are in the traditional vein. You'll find polished-wood headboards on the king-sized beds and lustrous armoires. The Bordello Suite, with exposed-brick and paneled walls, is prettier and more understated than you would expect from its name. In the Audubon Cottage, which is used for a meeting room, John James Audubon painted his Birds of America series. On-site parking is a plus, as are complimentary afternoon tea and a lending library. |
