In 1995 Bill Kimpton took the sow's ear of the once fashionable Bellevue Hotel and created a silk purse. This 1910 property may sit right across the street from the venerable Clift Hotel, but you'll feel as if you've boarded the Orient Express. Designer Cheryl Rowley has an audacious way of mixing shades of gold and yellow with vertical stripes and Chinese red to create a rich, warm environment. It's a 1990s version of 1930s décor, but with high energy and fresh style. The lobby sports lots of marble, fresh-cut flowers, two fireplaces and a reception desk that looks like a giant, leather steamer trunk, complete with brass studs and trim. The lobby ceiling features a trompe l'oeil travel motif with biplanes and hot-air balloons. The hotel has 201 rooms and suites, all of which are bravely decorated with green-and-yellow or charcoal-and-ivory stripes. Eclectic desks and other odd but tasteful furnishings populate the rooms, and amenities include robes, L'Occitane bath products and complimentary coffee. The smell of wood-burning ovens permeates the Grand Café. Once the Bellevue ballroom, it now serves light Californian-French fare. The restaurant showcases a 30-foot-high ceiling, massive columns and French art nouveau posters painted on the walls, all of which are bathed in a warm amber glow. The adjoining Petit Café offers small plates and is decorated with whimsical bronze statues of rabbits and chimpanzees. This hotel is extremely pet-friendly, offering pet packages that include goodies for your furry loved one. |
