| With no concierge, no restaurant and no room service, this isn't the place to stay for amenities, but the slightly out-of-fashion hotel is a great find for frugal travelers. The chandeliers and pink leather sofa in the lobby don't quite match the fake flowers and French provincial chairs. But who cares? The location is swell, one block up from the Dragon Gate entrance to Chinatown. Six floors house 71 small, chain-style rooms. All are equipped with voicemail, wireless high-speed Internet access and TVs, while bathrooms offer showers and wall-mounted hair dryers. The décor favors mauve and light-colored wooden furnishings. Top-floor rooms feature pretty plantation shutters. This floor was once a nightclub and Chinese tea garden---don't miss out on the beautiful stained-glass dome and windows leftover from the glory days. To make the most of your stay, request a corner room. They are larger, and at no extra cost you can look out onto St. Mary's Square and the Financial District high rises. |
