This moderately sized, moderately priced Union Square hotel greets visitors with a new-millennium look of stainless steel and glass, polished black granite tiles and cobalt-blue carpeting. The postage stamp-sized lobby houses an onyx reception desk and still centers around four large TV monitors tuned to vintage movies. The small rooms are as well-equipped and as cleverly designed as can be, featuring high-tech TVs with VCRs (videos are available) and comfortable beds with down comforters and sculptural steel headboards that sail to the ceiling. The furniture reminds one of office file cabinets warmed up with wooden surfaces. While the views are mostly of neighboring brick walls, they actually help ensure quiet in the noisy Theater District. If you can't abide the neighborhood noise, request a room on an upper floor. For added luxury, reserve a room on the Salon Floor, whose rooms come with feather beds, bathrobes, complimentary continental breakfast, mini-refrigerators and iPod docking stations. Slick meeting rooms and lounges created by local design impresarios from fashion designer Colleen Quen to skateboard pro Pete Colpitts offer hip, happening gathering space, while a small fitness room gives guests a place to stay in shape while on the road. |
