Villa Florence is another old hotel that has been skillfully spruced up for those who don't want to pay outrageous prices for a Union Square location. This particular site on the Powell Street cable car line is a little tawdry outside, but is well-situated for a downtown shopping spree. It is known for its great service and family-style hospitality. The Italianate lobby is moderately attractive, with a fireplace, plush seating and a fresco depicting Florence. The Italian theme also permeates through to the amenities. All guests receive a complimentary copy of the Villa Voice, which provides information on current happenings. To one side of the hotel is the long-established Italian restaurant, Kuleto's. The 183 rooms, fixed up in 1997, combine modern dressers and armoires (which hide TVs) with mustard green and crimson-colored bedspreads, drapes and overstuffed chairs. Caffè Kuleto's serves up sandwiches and light fare. Valet parking is $40 a day. |
