A San Francisco favorite since 1983, and a historic landmark for 100 years, Campton Place is to the San Francisco hotel scene as the Transamerica Pyramid is to the city skyline. Taj hotels took Campton over in 2007 and changes have been slow, smart and subtle so as not to shock the hotel's loyal following. The facade remains the same: porthole windows at the sides of the hotel, muted color scheme, uniformed door men who dutifully greet. The 110 guest rooms are slowly incorporating some small and large modern Taj touches: from bathrobe material to adding penthouses. Guest room décor is warm with pear or cherry wood accents, Portuguese limestone, stenciled armoires, leather-topped writing desks. Window seats are long enough (and cushy enough) to take a casual afternoon nap in after returning from a Maiden Lane shopping excursion. As for luxe amenities, they're in abundance: soaking tubs come fitted with European fixtures, Bose sound system/clocks sport surround sound. Taj has upgraded televisions to flat screens and internet access is available throughout the hotel. Service has always been--and remains--a hallmark. You'll benefit from smart-as-a-whip concierges (ask them just about anything and they'll point you in the right direction) and a staff that goes out of its way to be helpful. The on-site fitness terrace treats gym-goers to a one-of-a-kind view of Union Square, its tethered breezy canopy makes a workout truly enjoyable. Chef Srijith Gopinathan helms Campton Place restaurant, transforming the dining experience with touches from his Indian upbringing. Expect top-notch wine attention with Master Sommelier, Richard Deane. |
