Balanced precariously on the edge of the Tenderloin, the Phoenix was once a 1950s cinderblock motel, known for its Magic Fingers beds. In 1987, Joie de Vivre Hotels bought the dilapidated property and reincarnated it into a funky, 44-room inn. The lemon-and-turquoise painted motel has attracted various trendsetters, ranging from artists and actors to filmmakers and movie stars to bands and hip musicians. Among the eclectic collection of celebrity overnighters---Keanu Reeves, Dan Rather and Sinead O'Connor. The rooms are bungalow-style, and their colorful décor features bamboo furniture, tropical plants and original pop art, as well as artwork by local artists. Outside in the art garden, a bean-shaped swimming pool with a famous underwater mural lies between the motel and neighboring Bambuddha Lounge---a hip Asian-inspired restaurant that morphs into a popular nightclub at night. Continental breakfast and parking are free. Additional services include massage, concierge, same-day laundry and access to a nearby health club. The Phoenix's famous blunder? Accidentally booking John F. Kennedy, Jr. and Blondie's Deborah Harry in the same room. |
