This West Village restaurant opened up with a ton of promise but stumbled on its way out of the gates, most publicly with a series of chef changes, including the fiery Jason Neroni. Now, San Francisco native Jonnatan Leiva is in charge of the kitchen and has stabilized things. His menu eschews his predecessors’ proclivities for Mediterranean fare for more straight-up American cuisine, keeping some of the classics that made 10 Downing a decent go-to neighborhood spot, including the very good short rib burger. The crispy Scottish salmon is done right, the crackly skin encasing the juicy meat and the accompanying saffron butter and bean-radicchio stew adding another taste dimension. The roasted strip sirloin (with bone marrow and gnocchi) will do an admirable job of satiating the carnivore, but the suckling pig will do a better job of fulfilling that promise. The international wine list has a few affordable options by the bottle and small carafe and there’s a nice selection of local brews on offer.
