 Whether you’re closing a business deal or having a conversation with someone special, 14 West rates high on the go-to list. The semi-private dining rooms and bar are chic, welcoming and crowded with visitors to the city as well as those that want to be seen with VIPs. The menu is familiar, if Southern-tinged, with options that include fried green tomatoes nestled atop a cream corn sauce; shrimp and Tasso ham accompanied by a cheddar polenta cake; or a juicy, fried chicken with whipped potatoes, green beans and a Georgia peach. While the lamb shank and spinach risotto are infused with Italian flavors, the steaks and chops are all-American, especially when paired with seasonal sides from the Midwest. A tip to first timers: While you’re dining downstairs, keep your eyes peeled; a visiting dignitary or rock star may well be having dinner and spending the night in one of the pricey suites or penthouse apartment.
