Despite the multitude of noteworthy restaurants in Russian Hill, locals flock to this spot for rustic, ingredient-driven California cuisine served up in a neighborly atmosphere. The simple room is outfitted with marble-topped tables, a well-worn concrete floor and tasteful sconces that cast a golden glow upon the dining room. Slip into the meal with a crostini trio consisting of earthy, crushed fava beans, seasoned chicken liver and brandade. Bibb lettuce dressed in mustard vinaigrette is fortified with applewood-smoked bacon and chopped eggs while the arugula salad matches sweet white peaches with toasted almonds and Humboldt Fog goat cheese. The unique fritto misto is a tussled pile of lightly fried sand dabs, Walla Walla onion rings and fennel.
