Dining room at 1550 Hyde St. Café & Wine Bar, San Francisco, CADespite the multitude of noteworthy restaurants in Russian Hill, locals flock to this spot for rustic, ingredient-driven California cuisine served up in a neighborly atmosphere. The simple room is outfitted with marble-topped tables, a well-worn concrete floor and tasteful sconces that cast a golden glow upon the dining room. Slip into the meal with a crostini trio consisting of earthy, crushed fava beans, seasoned chicken liver and brandade. Bibb lettuce dressed in mustard vinaigrette is fortified with applewood-smoked bacon and chopped eggs while the arugula salad matches sweet white peaches with toasted almonds and Humboldt Fog goat cheese. The unique fritto misto is a tussled pile of lightly fried sand dabs, Walla Walla onion rings and fennel. Adventurous diners will appreciate the rosé-braised rabbit infused with tarragon and served over spätzle. Wine is an important part of the meal as evidenced by the numerous styles of glasses proffered with each specific style of wine. The wine list is regionally mixed and somewhat pricey, but a specially paired tasting flight or one of the over 20 wines by the glass might help you to find your favorite. Don't miss the polenta-almond cake with strawberries and whipped cream, a perfect match for a small glass of dessert wine.
