THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED 1837 Restaurant Review:

THIS RESTAURANT IS CURRENTLY CLOSED. Step from busy Dover Street into Brown's and the hustle and bustle of London disappears. This is more country than town, with wood paneling throughout and soft, patterned carpets. 1837 is a large room and staff pad about with surprising speed and deftness. Service is impeccable: attentive and professional. Chef Andrew Turner is behind for the menu. Watercress soup, with upfront intensity, comforting and served in a teacup, kicked things off well. A salad of lobster with minted scallions, tamarind and mesclun leaves was suitably sweet and sour, packing punch and elegance in equal proportion. Filet of Black Angus beef, salsify, wild mushrooms and a sweet meat glaze was hearty without being heavy. Cheese is one of the better boards in London, while desserts might be straight tarte Tatin, or Chocolate Indulgence with chilled apricot cream, the latter suitably wicked. The wine list is one of the best in London with sommelier John Gilchrist knowledgeable, astute and stylish. Let him match each course; you will be amazed.
