1947 Indian Restaurant Restaurant Review:

The restaurant’s name is a dead giveaway: 1947 is the year that India gained independence from the British Empire, and it’s when the Indian subcontinent divided into two countries, India and Pakistan. Aside from these historic incidents, the rather classy digs do celebrate India, as you can see from the modernist art, especially the caricature of Gandhi overtaking the back wall, and the light-lined drawing of the Taj Mahal. The extensive menu captures some of the country’s most famous dishes: samosas, pakoras, biryani and tandoori kebabs, to name a few. Be sure to read through all the sections, and note that some “must try” items are checked, including the potent kozhi varuval (cubed chicken tossed with a spicy masala) as an appetizer. You’ll find regional specialties such as the Jaipur lal maas, or lamb cooked with dried chilies (searingly hot if you ask for Indian hot; even a milder version calls for ice water). Grilled items, popular Indian curries, breads and sides round out the offerings. For dessert, try the mango kulfi (ice cream). Beer and wine are available.
