| A happy crowd packs into this high-energy restaurant for fog-lifting house cocktails (half-price happy hour weeknights 5 p.m.-6 p.m.), a sophisticated bar scene, and an appealing menu of American favorites. Co-owners Melinda Randolph, chef, and David Gray oversee a stylish dining room dotted with bright paintings. The menu is approachable enough to satisfy even the pickiest eaters, yet there is gourmet flair in every dish. Roast chicken arrives with crisp skin, a side of steaming mashed potatoes and is piled high with a crown of thin, salty onion rings. A starter salad looks like any other, but underneath the well-dressed greens is a warm disc of oven-caramelized potatoes and melting Fontina. Watch out for too much of the aforementioned flair. Brunch is well-known: buttermilk fried chicken salad with blue cheese, chorizo and eggs with steaming tortillas, and roasted banana french toast with rum butter all go best with a Bloody Mary. |
