| A happy crowd packs into this high-energy restaurant for fog-lifting house cocktails (half-price happy hour weeknights 5 p.m.-6 p.m.), a sophisticated bar scene, and a menu so delicious we're surprised (and thrilled) that this place isn't over-booked every night of the week. Co-owners Melinda Randolf, chef, and David Gray have created a warm, friendly neighborhood restaurant with a casual, stylish dining room dotted with bright paintings and packed with tables. The mostly American menu is approachable enough to satisfy even the pickiest eaters, yet there is gourmet flair in every dish. The roast chicken, for example, arrives with crisp skin, a side of steaming mashed potatoes and is piled high with a crown of thin, salty onion rings. A starter salad looks like any other, but underneath the well-dressed greens is a warm disc of oven-caramelized potatoes and melting Fontina cheese. Watch out for too much flair. Sometimes the chef can over-think dishes and when choosing between two equally attractive options, go with simplicity. Brunch brings out buttermilk fried chicken salad with blue cheese, chorizo and eggs with steaming tortillas and roasted banana French toast with rum butter. |
