| We’ve been following Jeffrey Fournier for a long time (except where it might get us arrested). His spot in Newton Highlands is clean and bright and bedecked with the abstract paintings of Fournier himself. The setting (formerly that of Le Soir) complements the food, marked by a precision in proportion to its creativity. His signature pan-seared watermelon steak, for one, is a real discovery, completely transforming watery freshness into a fleshy exemplar of umami. Equally refreshing are the liquor-paired small plates: Taleggio-stuffed, prosciutto-wrapped dates with rose-orange liquor make for a sultry momentary transport to the Mediterranean. Entrées, such as the clam, cockle and chorizo risotto (a strange but worthy experiment with flavors and textures that don’t meld so much as battle for supremacy on the palate), are intriguing. We also like the chalkboard "economic stimulus" specials: three courses for $33, based on culinary specialties from across the U.S. |
