Owner Michael Campbell's 840 North First is the only place on the block where you can get anything approaching a gourmet meal. You'll find a nice ambience yet the cuisine continues to fall a little flat in our book. Pastas, steaks and starters are tasty but never fully realize their California cuisine potential, in spite of the fact that many of them have been on the menu for years and should be perfected by now in our opinion. We recommend grilled game dishes, particularly ostrich, if it's available. You'll be pleasantly surprised by the savory, distinctive flavor---almost like beef, but much less fattening. Portions are generous so an entrée salad will suffice for smaller appetites. Save space for a bite or two of house-made dessert.
