For devout Park Meadows regulars---and their shopo-phobic opposites---Alcatraz is something of an oasis. For shoppers this prison-themed brewpub offers a unique setting for tallying up the credit card damage and diverting the youngsters over a meal. The space is roomy, the booths are comfy and the lineup of convicts peering from the walls provides a goofy diversion. The menu also offers rewards with an array of competently prepared pub fare and a chain gang of more ambitious offerings. It’s not great, but the spread is considerably better than the criminal food usually found in mall food courts. For the craft beer lover and those caught in the draft of a rabid shopper, Alcatraz serves a more important purpose. Get past the institutional motif and the beer nut and the retail-challenged can wash away their cares with fresh pints of surprisingly good beer. Sure, the Rock sits in a mall, but the made-right-here beer list is as good as any downtown brewpub’s. We recommend the Pelican Pale Ale and the darker side of the suds list. The Birdman Brown is caramelly sweet and the stout is rich, robust and roasted---perfect for whiling away a shopping mall sentence.
