| It may seem an anomaly, but some of the best Italian restaurants in San Antonio aren't run by Italians at all. Over the years, Aldo Ghaffari and various family members have established an improbable Italian restaurant dynasty in the city, the flagship of which is Aldo's Ristorante Italiano, a restaurant that does indeed speak the language but with a kind of quasi-Continental flair. The restaurant's dimly lit interior still suggests the building's allegedly checkered past as a roadhouse, but only gently; the place now has a comfortably contemporary look. If there's a shortfall anywhere it's in the arena of excitement---not that being classily comforting is without its merits. An earthy, house-made minestrone is the stuff of simple pleasures; a grilled portobello drizzled with balsamic vinegar and served with polenta is home-cooking raised to new heights; and farfalle alla vodka is one of our favorite pastas. Quaglie alla griglia (grilled quail in a saffron-tomato sauce) and salmone alla Pavarotti (poached salmon with a sauce of dill, capers and cream) occupy the culinary high ground at chez Aldo's. The unadorned, grilled costoletta of veal is a paragon of Platonic plain, and the wine list, appropriately invested with ultra-Italian offerings, can provide vini of the big-Barolo or Super Tuscan persuasion to partner it perfectly. |
