| On the busy corner where Rooster used to rule the coop, Alma has become a serious player in the Mission District dining scene. Johnny Alamilla, who once worked at Boulevard, Postrio and Che, bears his heart and soul in this comfortable and tasty Nuevo Latino venture. A mixed crowd, buoyant with happy chatter, fills the comfortable room of white- and turquoise-washed walls with dark wood accents. Refined foods from cultures all over Latin America show up on his menu. Try the list of ceviches that top the menu or the cumin-scented pork chop with chile jus and jicima slaw. An intriguing wine list focuses on the exports of Chili, Argentina, Portugal, Spain and Mexico and a wine flight tasting option at the table or at the bar will allow for a nice sampling. The addition of a full bar has seen the addition of a signature cocktail menu that includes such sparkling starters as Almarita, a tasty margarita rendition spiked with agua fresca, a fantastic house mojito, and the distinct Bloody Mary mixed with the fresh, house-made gazpacho infused with chipotle chilies. |
