Ambar Restaurant Review:

About the restaurant: Ambar is the first Balkan restaurant in the metro area, and its original outpost is located on Capitol Hill.

Food & Drinks: Striking a responsive chord in the hearts of local foodies, the Balkan dining experience is somewhat staggering with so many dishes, including everything from smoked salmon with capers to assorted flatbreads, cheeses (urnebes, or aged cow cheese, for example), meat pies, vegetables, slow-cooked items and seafood. Selections are so diverse that your best bet is to take along some buddies and splurge on this unique cuisine. Start with either the beef or lamb prosciutto, followed by the smooth eggplant spread to slather over the very tender bread. For entrées, meat lovers will enjoy the ground beef or lamb kebabs and an order or two of the savory pork sausage with mustard sauce. When it comes to desserts, pair the crispy apple or pear pies wrapped in phyllo with a Serbian cherry liqueur. Ask about Balkan cocktails, such as the Sarajevo Old Fashion made with plum rakia.
