The American Grilled Cheese Kitchen Restaurant Review: Young SoMa start-up employees flock to The American Grilled Cheese Kitchen for --- what else? --- grilled cheese sandwiches. But this isn't just any grilled cheese: it's gourmet. From the chewy, butter brushed Pinkie's Bakery levain (they also offer house-made gluten-free bread) to the artisan cheeses such as Tillamook cheddar and Point Reyes blue, these hot sandwiches delight. There's only one problem: there isn't a plain Jane on the menu. Traditionalists may have their palates stretched by a sandwich stuffed with Fontina and Gruyère, roasted wild mushrooms and gold potatoes, caramelized onions and thyme butter, or indulge in the Foghorn Leghorn, complete with Point Reyes blue, creamy havarti, Zoe's Roasted Chicken, arugula and dill-Dijon mustard. Each decadent sandwich is delivered with a small orange --- a polite nod to our health. There's also a short selection of salads and soups (tomato is always on the menu).
