Evan Kleiman wears more hats than just her chef's toque---she's an activist for Slow Food, a cookbook author and the host of the local KCRW "Good Food" weekly radio show. Yet, she continues to bring her culinary expertise to the kitchen of her hip Italian eatery on Melrose. Hers was one of the first cafés in town to serve modern, unadorned Italian cuisine. Share a plate of Sicilian deep-fried rice-and-potato croquettes or a crisp-crusted pizza topped with pesto, onions, pine nuts and cheese or simply olive oil and garlic. Then move on to Kleiman's pure-and-simple pastas or her succulent lemon-and-garlic-roasted chicken. Frankly, we're perfectly happy with the panini, served on chewy pizza bread.
