THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Ani Restaurant Review:

Ani means “elder brother” in Japanese, and it’s a fitting name for Ty and Troy Fujimura’s second Japanese restaurant --- they also own Arami. Blown-up family portraits decorate the wall above the kitchen. Ani’s diverse menu showcasing traditional Japanese flavors across a wide spectrum is a testament to executive chef Shin Matsuda’s talent. There are grilled meats and vegetables off the robata grill, donburi rice bowls, an assortment of comforting noodles and plenty of sushi and sashimi options. Kushiyaki, juicy chicken thighs sprinkled liberally with togarashi, and the double ahi specialty maki are not to be missed. An extensive saké selection is one of the largest in Chicago, organized in an approachable fashion by flavor profile, with categories ranging from fragrant and floral to rich and classic. Try the house Ichi No Torii saké, brewed exclusively for Ani and Arami, with clean melon notes that pair well with nigiri. Pastry chef Erin Cade’s desserts, including a matcha milk cake that’s a cross between tres leches and bread pudding topped with a tangy quenelle of mango sorbet, are a light and refreshing conclusion. Sesame panna cotta sprinkled with orange segments and hibiscus granita is another winner.
