This bright and cheery café is a welcome respite from the cold Portland rain. Ms. Hughes, a Portland legend by virtue of her reading room café at Powell’s City of Books, is a warm hostess. She changes her soup and salad menu daily, enhancing familiar standbys with delicious touches. She may add zing to a cheese sandwich by adding pesto mayonnaise, or serve turkey on focaccia instead of boring old whole wheat bread. The delightful yellow décor will lift even the sourest mood. And her impromptu bookstore is a neighborhood treasure.
