| Devoted to representing authentically and faithfully the cuisine of their native Tuscany, brothers Marco and Alessandro Betti, heirs to some serious restaurant genes, have crafted an establishment that allows patrons to choose the kind of dining experience they want. Marco handles management duties, while Alessandro wears the top toque. A soaring dramatic bar space makes sipping its own pleasure, allowing guests to enjoy a comfortable upholstered banquette or small table while chatting and sampling the appealing bar menu. In the intimate dining room, well-spaced tables ensure privacy in conversation. Topnotch risotto is made to-order, and most pastas may be enjoyed in half portions. One of our favorites is the gnocchetti di patate---light house-made potato dumplings that take perfectly to their Tuscan tomato sauce. Treatments are traditional, with no experimental nonsense, yielding classic osso buco, for instance. The rib-eye, sliced and perched atop wilted arugula, rivals anything a steakhouse could purvey. The glorious salads, based on arugula with a touch of meat, feature good balsamic vinegar in the vinaigrette. The house-made ice creams are splendid, and the panna cotta is classically done and topped with fresh berries. The heart of the wine list is Italian, with some standard American selections, though we wish there were some California-Italian choices. |
