Applebee's is a neighborhood favorite. The spinach and artichoke dip served with roasted tomato salsa, sour cream and tortilla chips is popular, but if you're health-conscious you can get a tasty salad such as the mesquite chicken breast tossed with mixed greens, tomatoes, black beans and jalapeño peppers in a spicy barbecue-ranch dressing. We like the grilled tilapia, a delicious fish topped with mango salsa served over a bed of rice pilaf. The blondie dessert, baked with pecans and topped with ice cream and chopped walnuts and covered with maple butter sauce, is worth the splurge. The sizeable pub-style bar offers plenty for the grown-ups, including a line of signature drinks with such names as Summer Squeeze blending Bacardi Limón rum, lemonade and berry or kiwi flavors. Despite this being a chain restaurant, there's a homey appeal about Applebee's, not only making families feel at home, but also paying homage to nearby high school's sports teams and to other hometown heroes.
