THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED App's Restaurant Review:
You dont often hear hip and Hartford in the same sentence, but Apps, a chic outpost out-of-place in the citys Italian South End, warrants that word combination. Apps takes the Spanish concept of tapas or small plate dining and adds a multicultural twist...and a martini bar. Though the restaurant identifies itself as a purveyor of American Tapas, the menu actually traverses the globe featuring Asian, Italian, Greek and American flavors. Diners can share a variety of hors doeuvres, appetizers, small plates and even a limited selection of large plates while agonizing over their selection from the list of 67 martini concoctions---dont be surprised to hear the standard line that they wont let you try them all in one night. The modern design of the intimately-lit restaurant, black and tan with metal and marble accents and oversized abstract paintings, is an appropriately minimalist backdrop against which artful dishes are presented. Your designer dinner can include any number of selections, which may be ordered in waves. We particularly relished the sesame-crusted seared tuna sashimi served with tangy, tart ginger fries. A scallop Tatin features delicately crisp pastry and large scallops floating in a garlic-cilantro cream sauce. Small plate dining encourages you to savor each taste and allows you to realize, perhaps sooner than youd like, that your hunger is well satisfied.
