Aska Restaurant Review

: Step into this Williamsburg art studio where concrete floors, long wooden tables, and painted brick walls create the stark setting for the Scandinavian stylings of chef Fredrik Berselius, who has logged time in the kitchens of Seasonal and Corton. His New Nordic cuisine adheres to all the “rules” of the genre: it’s über seasonal, it emphasizes minimalism, and it can bring out an explosion of flavor from the dullest of root vegetables. There’s an à la carte lounge menu and seven- and ten-course prix-fixe menus, all of which change frequently. But expect to be showered with snacks first, in the form of Maine shrimp or pigs’ blood crackers (which are better than they sound). Other dishes that may roll out are fried spheres of pork and mashed potato paired with, naturally, lingonberry sauce, and dill-topped raw scallops served on a scallop chip. It’s all done with the precision of a Swiss watchmaker. Or in this case, a Swedish chef. Intriguing house cocktails, a globe-spanning wine list and several craft beers complete the picture. Despite the elevated fare, service is casual but attentive.
