Assaggi Osteria Restaurant Review: McLean’s main street area is a treasure trove of restaurants, among them the elegant Assaggi Osteria directed by chef Domenico Comacchia. A busy man who divides his time between his three establishments, he may sit down and tell you the tales of his career. Better yet, he might scurry to the kitchen and bring out an array of house pastas, such as the unique lasagna made with thinly sliced eggplant; garganelli with beef, veal and pork Bolognese sauce; and tender gnocchi. Ask if the baby octopus salad is available; it’s a surprisingly delicate mix of tender octopus, potatoes, green beans and heirloom tomatoes. You’ll find osso buco on Tuesday nights and lobster on Wednesdays. If you are dropping in at lunch, take advantage of the chef’s special menu, which means you eat well for a minimal tab. Desserts are classic Italian, from zeppoli to a hazelnut semifreddo. Assaggi Osteria has an extensive wine list and assorted interesting cocktails.
