Cakes & Ale to Expand By Fall
Billy and Kristin Allin will move their Cakes & Ale to an expanded spot not far from the current W. Ponce de Leon Avenue corner they've occupied since opening. They will renovate three spaces by the entry to the MARTA station, taking over what is currently American Subs and a cell phone store adjacent to it. The move will give the young culinary team space to have much needed private dining---something Decatur desperately needs---and they'll open a freestanding bakery in the space now occupied by Panda Express. The move also will give them a patio alongside the building on Church Street. The bakery, to the delight of their pastry chef, Cynthia Wong, will purvey scones, croissants, muffins and similar breakfast goodies as it will be open morning to evening. The team will bake breads for lunch, to be used on some of the sandwiches, and will have a wood-burning oven for that purpose. At night, the bakery will become a dessert bar, offering desserts and wines. Plans call for a fall reopening. Cakes & Ale, 254 W. Ponce de Leon Ave., Decatur, GA 30030, 404-377-7994.

Chef Shuffle

After more than a decade, Scott Peacock resigned from Watershed to do other things. His resignation, in late February, was greeted with dismay. Famous for his fried chicken, as well as other esteemed fare, Peacock had begun his work in Atlanta cooking fresh out of college (Florida State University) for the governor's mansion. He went on from that to meet Edna Lewis, and they formed a working team that lasted until her death at almost 90 years of age in 2006. Together they produced a cookbook, The Gift of Southern Cooking. Emily Saliers, a co-owner of Watershed and one of the Indigo Girls, has indicated that Watershed's kitchen team, which is accustomed to working solo when Peacock travels, will continue to put out the same food while Saliers and co-owner Ross Jones decide on a new executive chef. Watershed, 406 W. Ponce de Leon Ave., Decatur, GA 30030, 404-378-4900.
