THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Audubon Cafe Restaurant Review: Open since 1959, Audubon Café serves the best breakfast in town, with perfectly cooked eggs, salty, bracing country ham, finely textured grits, hearty red-eye gravy and sublimely fluffy biscuits just made for a dousing with peppery cream gravy. Standard Southern home-style dishes like chicken and dumplings, chicken fried steak, and liver and onions are good but vegetables are even better; try the earthy turnip greens (with chopped country ham), black-eyed peas and mildly spicy red beans and rice. Desserts are disappointing, however; who ever heard of a home-cooking restaurant that couldnt turn out decent apple cobbler? Still, Audubon is worth a visit, particularly for breakfast, served until 1:30 p.m. on weekends. |
