Chef Rachel Klein’s hidden gem sparkles with whimsical spice and a certain amount of deconstruction inside the Seaport Hotel.

Aura has attracted a lot of attention since the arrival of executive chef Rachel Klein. She brought her famed steak and eggs dish---Brandt filet mignon with potato purée, topped with a crispy poached truffle egg and bordelaise sauce, served with a side of asparagus---to this hidden gem, located near the World Trade Center inside the Seaport Hotel. Previous diners balked at the location of the restaurant (placed seemingly inside the hotel’s lobby), but renovations produced a space designed to reflect the private quarters of a sea captain in keeping with the hotel’s maritime history. For breakfast, you will find the traditional offerings of buttermilk pancakes, french toast and eggs Benedict, but it’s the unexpected lunch selections, like the Bostonian burger with baked beans, bacon, white cheddar and a fried egg, that we enjoy seeing on the menu. For dinner, Klein takes on a challenge of her own, boldly pairing up pan-roasted scallops with a red wine reduction. The apple pie with brown butter filling and sweet ginger sauce is complemented with vanilla ice cream.

Unremarkable food, skimpy portions, horrible service
by cgriswold on 06/25/2008

Of all the restaurants I've been to in Boston this is one to avoid. The food is unremarkable, the portions are skimpy, and the service is horrible.
Our dinning experience was awful. It took 2+ hours for a simple three course meal. The last insult was a 20% service charge on the bill.
Avoid Aura.
