Avenida is a far cry from your typical Mexican joint. Chandeliers hang over well-spaced black tables in a tasteful, even sleek dining room. In contrast to the restrained design, however, is bold, complex and, at times, innovative cuisine. Though it’s not exactly the ceviche it claims to be since its main ingredient is grilled, a dish of scallops, sweet as could be, is nicely balanced by a tart citrus marinade; the use of three different kinds of wild mushrooms makes for an interesting twist on the classic quesadilla. (Of course, at $18, the expected price gets a twist too.) While tender, well-seasoned carne asada holds to the standard, chile rellenos stuffed with lump crab and ancho-crusted filet mignon in a wild mushroom-agave sauce make for rather elegant departures. Speaking of culinary twists, don't forgo the orange flan, a subtly tart orange flavored custard topped with seasonal berries. Do skip the churros though; these Mexican donuts are overly fried and cloying.
